Expanded Chapter Call

Over the past few months, I have discussed many issues concerning security, privacy, and other interesting topics as they apply to Virtual Worlds and the 3D Web. Two other concepts continually infuse these stimulating discussions: interaction and immersive environments.

Interaction takes many forms, such as social interaction, interaction with the virtual world, etc. and has been the focus of more than one of the submitted chapters.

We also see the need to expand into Immersive Environments as well to include virtual realms such as massively multiplayer [role-playing] online games (MMOs and MMORPGs). These communities are rife with many of the security challenges we need to address as more people move into these realms for business and pleasure.

After conversations with the publisher, we are expanding the book's coverage to bring these areas into the overall discussion. As a result, we need a few chapters in these areas to round out the books' coverage as a whole. However, that's not to say chapters on the original focus are still not encouraged as well. Since we are opening up the window for a few more submissions, we will consider these as well.

The book is still on track for publication in the Spring 2010. In order to keep our schedule, new papers will be fast-tracked through the double-blind review process. Proposals and queries are still encouraged well before the date, but are not required:

  • September 15: Full Chapters Due
  • October 30: Chapter Decisions
  • November 23: Final Chapters Due
  • Spring 2010: Book Published

Renewed Chapter Call

Response to the book has been phenomenal. This project has given me the chance to talk with so many researchers in the area of Virtual Worlds, the 3D Web, and Security. This book promises to be an excellent resource and a great read.

As a result, the publisher has agreed to accept more chapter proposals for a larger book and allow for more time in the overall schedule.

The new schedule is as follows for additional chapters:

  • April 3: Chapter Proposal Deadline
  • April 15: Chapter Proposal Decisions
  • May 29: Full Chapters Due
  • June: Reviews and Decisions
  • July 31: Revised Chapters Due
  • August 5: Final Chapter Decisions
  • August 31: Final Chapters Due

As an additional bonus, authors of accepted proposals now have until June 30 as well to submit their full chapters.

Proposal Deadline Extended

The book has received some great chapter proposals to date. There will be chapters discussing social policies and practices within virtual worlds, exploring specific technologies and applications to increase Web3D security, building secure yet interactive virtual learning spaces, and combating griefers and trolls within specific virtual contexts.

The above being said, I would still like to solicit additional chapter proposals. After discussions with the publisher, I can now accept 2-3 page proposals until March 1, 2009.

If you have ideas or questions you would like to send my way before writing your brief chapter proposal, please drop me an e-mail or give me a call at 1.269.387.4247

I look forward to hearing from you.
